VOLUNTEERISM-A WAY OF LIFE

ANIMAL WELFARE PAROS

    By Symeoni Xeniti C'4

Animal Welfare Paros has been operating officially since 2014, but animal volunteers have existed since 2011. The aim of the article is to share with the newspaper readers my personal experience as a volunteer.

The responsibilities of a volunteer are not demanding, intended to meet the basic needs of animals and the refuge. The "difficult" daily life of a volunteer in the Paros shelter includes daily animal care, tidying up of their area of residence and play time with the completion of the above "unbearable" work. Anyone can become a volunteer, helping in their own way.

The people who care for the animals at the same time takes care of the island's image, animal safety and reinforces the feeling of humanity which seems to be missing nowadays. If you have a little free time, give it a try and help out at the shelter that you would like to part of the team.

ARABIAN HORSES

BY AMBRA DOKU, C'4

https://www.britannica.com/animal/Arabian-horse

The Arabian horse, earliest improved breed of horse, valued for its speed, stamina, beauty, intelligence, and gentleness. The breed’s long history has been obscured by  legend, but it had been developed in Arabia by the 7th century CE. The Arabian horse has contributed its qualities to most of the modern breeds of light horses.

The Arabian breed is a compact, relatively small horse with a small head, protruding eyes, wide nostrils, marked withers, and a short back. It usually has only 23 vertebrae, while 24 is the usual number for other breeds. The horse’s average height is about 15 hands (60 inches, or 152 cm), and its average weight ranges from 800 to 1,000 pounds (360 to 450 kg). It has strong legs and fine hooves. The coat, tail, and mane are of fine, silky hair. Although many colours are possible in the breed, gray prevails. The most famous stud farm is in the region of Najd, Saudi Arabia, but many fine Arabian horses are now bred elsewhere.

THE EURASIAN COLLARED DOVE

By Gregory Mesologitis, C'3

The Eurasian collared dove (Streptopelia decaocto) is a dove species native to Europe and Asia; it was introduced to Japan, North America and islands in the Caribbean.

The generic name is from the Ancient Greek streptos meaning "collar" and peleia meaning "dove"; the specific epithet is Greek for "eighteen". The number comes from a Greek myth. A maid was unhappy that she was only paid 18 pieces a year and begged the gods to let the world know how little she was rewarded by her mistress. Thereupon Zeus created this dove that has called out "Deca-octo" ever since.

It is a medium-sized dove, distinctly smaller than the wood pigeon with an average length of 32 cm from tip of beak to tip of tail, with a wingspan of 47–55 cm (19–22 in), and a weight of 125–240 g. It is grey-buff to pinkish-grey overall, a little darker above than below, with a blue-grey underwing patch. The iris is red, but from a distance the eyes appear to be black, as the pupil is relatively large and only a narrow rim of reddish-brown iris can be seen around the black pupil. The eye is surrounded by a small area of bare skin, which is either white or yellow. The two sexes are virtually indistinguishable; juveniles differ in having a poorly developed collar, and a brown iris.

The song is a goo-GOO-goo. The Eurasian collared dove also makes a harsh loud screeching call lasting about two seconds, particularly in flight just before landing. A rough way to describe the screeching sound is a hah-hah.

EVERYTHING YOU WANT TO KNOW ABOUT DOG FOOD

28 Foods Not To Feed Your Dog

Presented by Kleio Sarri, B5

Stop feeding your dog food without knowing how it could affect them.

Human Food Is Not Always Dog-Friendly

Foods that are perfectly suitable for human consumption, as well as other animals, may be toxic and even poisonous to your dog, posing a serious threat to their health and well-being. Why? Because all animals have very different rates of metabolism. Metabolism is the process of breaking down food and turning it into energy.
Please note that while we’re attempting to add every food we can find that is potentially unsafe for dogs, there are certain foods that we may miss, so don’t consider a food safe to feed to our dog just because it’s not on this list of foods bad for dogs.

ANIMAL OF THE FELINE FAMILY

TIGERS
Presented by Antonis Pantelaios, B2

The tiger (female) or the tiger (male) is a carnivorous mammal of the feline family, of which it is the largest and most powerful member. The species has the scientific name Panthera tigris, it responds exclusively to the Asian continent and is divided into 9 subspecies, 3 of which are considered extinct.
The tiger, one of the few animals of the so-called Charismatic Megafauna, is one of the most recognizable species in the world, with the characteristic pattern of vertical, dark streaks on a red-orange substrate on its upper surface and its lighter lower surface of her body. It is the largest species of "cat", reaching a total body length of up to 3.3 meters and weighing up to 306 kg. It has extremely large canines, the largest of the feline with a mill height of 74.5 to 90 mm.

ANIMAL CRUELTY

What Is Animal Cruelty and How Can We Stop it For Good?

Presented by Kleio Sarri, B5

Τι είναι η σκληρότητα των ζώων και πώς μπορούμε να την σταματήσουμε για πάντα;

Animal cruelty is real and pervasive. It happens to all different types of animals and in every corner of the world. It’s also preventable and unnecessary.
Every 60 seconds, an animal gets abused. That’s inconceivable, especially in our advanced culture, but animal cruelty continues to occur all over the world.
Animal cruelty can take many different forms, as you’ll discover below, but the impact is always the same. A sentient animal capable of love and creating social relationships experience pain, fear, and desperation. And it needs to stop.
We live in a world that not only turns a blind eye to animal cruelty but condones it — whether through indifference or legislation. It’s legal to raise chickens in deplorable conditions for the sole purpose of slaughtering them later. If that isn’t animal cruelty, then what is?
The problem is that there aren’t enough people fighting for animal rights. If everyone started to look at animals — and not just dogs and cats — as fellow animals who share our planet, we would see far fewer cases of cruelty toward animals.
First, though, we have to spread awareness. What is animal cruelty? What does it look like? And how can we stop contributing to it?

ANIMAL LIFE

Dolphins
Presented by Marianna Barbari, B2

The dolphin is fish-shaped and reaches 2-3m. It weighs about 200 kg. It is covered by hard shiny leather, ash-green on the back and light silver on the belly. His head, which is rather small, joins the rest of the body without a neck and results in a pointed nose, resembling a bird's beak. His mouth is very large and is armed with 150 - 200 one centimeter long teeth each. Between his little eyes he has two holes, the blowers, the nostrils, which serve him breathing. It breathes with lungs and not with gills like fish. So he pulls his head out every 2 - 3 minutes above the surface of the water and breathes ambient air. It has two wings in the shape of a sickle, one on the back and one on the tail. Both these fins and the thick layer of fat underneath the skin that makes it lighter make dolphin skillful and fast in swimming. It can run 50 km per hour. That's why they call it a "sea horse". Dolphins are marine mammals. The life span of dolphins reaches an average of 70 years.
