The history of hip hop music
BY ELENA BISMPIROULA C'3
Hip hop or hip-hop is a subculture and artistic movement
formed in the late 1970s by African-Americans and Puerto Ricans of the South
Bronx, New York. It became more widely known in the late 1980s, while in the
2000s it became the most popular music genre in the world.
DJ Afrika Bambaataa of the Zulu Nation, considered one of the three Founding Fathers of the hip-hop movement, highlighted the cornerstones of hip-hop culture, coining the following terms: the verbal rhythmic style of MCing or emceeing, DJing, i.e. the reproduction and in parts changing of songs and sounds with record players i.e. turntables and DJ mixers (aurally) b-boying/breaking (physically) and graffiti art, which he characterized as "aerosol writing" (visually).Other elements of hip hop subculture and art are, among others, hip hop culture and historical knowledge of the movement (intellectual and philosophical), beatboxing a genre of percussive sounds, street dancing, African American slang, and the genre of hip hop fashion and style. The term "hip hop" was first used, in writing, by Stephen Hager in The Village Voice newspaper.
