«100 YEARS FROM THE ASIA MINOR CATASTROPHE. MEMORY OF ASIA MINOR - PONTOU: HISTORICAL CONSIDERATION AND COLLECTIVE MEMORY»

Written by:

Andromachi Triantafyllidou-teacher of Religious Education,
Michalis Moraitidis, Anna Psichogiu, Margarita Malamateniou- teachers of Greek Language and Literature

On the occasion of the 100th Anniversary of the Asia Minor Catastrophe, the most cataclysmic event that took a toll on Greek society in the 20th century as it left its stamp on the collective memory and formed the historical consciousness of the Modern Greeks, we decided to conduct a project relevant to the specific historical period. The project is entitled "One Ηundred Υears of the Asia Minor Catastrophe. Memory of Asia Minor - Pontus. Historical consciousness and collective memory." Our goal is to make the pupils of our school aware of the dramatic events so that they themselves can recount the events in a historical continuous through iconic literary works and oral testimonies of survivors of the Catastrophe. With speech, sound and image help, students make up their own digital audiovisual material and convey images of another era to the present, raising concerns about the mechanisms and causes that led the prosperous Hellenism of our East to the Exodus, to their forced expatriation from the ancestral hearthstone and to devastation.
Our pursuit is for our participants to come into contact with one of the most disturbing pages of Greek history of the 20th century to eventually emerge as protagonists, subjects of historical narrative. In addition, to propose innovative practices of differentiated teaching and learning that could be used to enrich the teaching of History (as a school subject) and connecting it to individual fields and teaching subjects in Secondary Education (for example, Literature, Religious Studies, Music and Dance).

Students that participate in this project are:
Nikoleta Melaniti, Marianna Mostratou, Dimitris Mparmparis, B2
Katerina Papadopoulou, B3
Katerina Argyrou, C1
Marina Kalantzi, Panagiotis Zampounidis, Giannis Kontotheodorou, Kostas Kontos, C2
